Reducing Coal Dust Fire Risk at a Coal-Fired Power Generating Plant

The Challenge

A coal-fired electric power generating plant faced elevated fire risk due to ongoing coal dust accumulation throughout the facility. Coal dust can ignite easily, spread quickly, and create serious safety hazards if not properly managed.

The customer needed a fire protection solution that went beyond basic suppression. They were looking for a system that could help prevent fires before they started, while still meeting strict safety and operational requirements.

Why This Matters

Coal dust fires pose significant challenges for power generation facilities. Beyond the immediate safety concerns, these fires can lead to equipment damage, unplanned downtime, regulatory exposure, and costly repairs.

Traditional fire protection systems often focus only on suppression after ignition. In this environment, prevention is just as critical as response.

The Risk and Business Impact

Without a proactive solution, the customer faced:

  • Increased likelihood of coal dust ignition

  • Operational disruptions and downtime

  • Safety risks to personnel and equipmen

  • Potential compliance and regulatory concerns

A more thoughtful approach was needed to manage both fire suppression and ongoing fire prevention.

Our Solution and Approach

Our team worked closely with the customer to understand their facility layout, operational processes, and fire risk profile.

Based on those conversations, we designed and installed a fire sprinkler deluge system that served two critical purposes:

  • Robust fire suppression in the event of an emergency

  • Routine wash-down capability to remove coal dust from structures and equipment

This dual-purpose system allowed the customer to address fire risk proactively while maintaining a high level of protection.

Why This Solution Fit

Our design-build expertise and experience with industrial fire hazards allowed us to develop a practical solution tailored to the facility’s unique conditions.

All engineering and system design was completed in house. That ensured a detailed, accurate layout that aligned with the plant’s operations and fire water infrastructure. The result was a system designed to perform reliably under demanding conditions.

Execution

Using advanced design technology and experienced field crews, we installed a high-capacity deluge system integrated seamlessly with the existing fire water supply.

The system was thoroughly tested and commissioned to confirm proper operation for both fire suppression and routine wash-down use. Throughout the project, coordination and clear communication kept the work organized and efficient.

The Outcome and Results

The customer gained more than a fire suppression system. They gained a proactive method to reduce coal dust accumulation and lower overall fire risk.

Key outcomes included:

  • Enhanced fire protection across high-risk areas

  • Reduced likelihood of coal dust fires

  • Improved operational safety

  • Greater confidence in the facility’s fire protection strategy

The project reinforced our role as a trusted problem-solver for large, technically demanding industrial facilities.

Proven Capabilities Across Complex Projects

Across this and other complex projects, our success is driven by:

  • In-house fire sprinkler and suppression design, engineering, fabrication, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenanc

  • Expertise in fire pump systems, underground fire water mains, fire water tanks, and large industrial facilities

  • Advanced design using REVIT and 3D modeling

  • Highly experienced field crews who take pride in clean, code-compliant work

  • The ability to deliver complex, high-risk projects with organization, accountability, and technical excellence
